Research has shown nearly half (46%) of children who started reception class in 2020 were not “school ready”, compared with 35% in 2019. Teachers reported a key factor was less time spent at nursery due to lockdown.

In October 2020, young people were invited to join a series of focus groups and respond to a survey on the impact COVID-19 is having on them. In May 2020, the Centre for Children’s Rights from Queen’s University Belfast launched a survey for those aged eight to 17 to understand their “Life under Coronavirus”. Eight thematic briefings have been released to examine its findings.

Over 500 girls and young women aged seven to 21 took part and shared the challenges they face. The results have been analysed against findings from a similar 2018 survey, to compare what progress has been made and what issues remain.

‘From Scotland’s Young People’ is a five-year document detailing what changes Scottish Youth Parliament plans to make during the period 2021-26. Members of the Scottish Parliament can use this manifesto to form a strong mandate to bring about changes that matter to young people across Scotland and champion Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
