Proposal to ban social media for children

UK Government announced that there will be a consultation on improving children’s relationships with mobile phones and social media, including the option of banning social media for children. This follows similar action in Australia and a House of Lords amendment proposing a ban for under-16s.

With evidence from the pandemic exposing how children’s rights were sidelined, the Covid-19 Inquiry called for statutory Child Rights Impact Assessments. As the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill progresses through Report Stage in the House of Lords, there was strong support for Amendment 221, tabled by Baroness Lister, which would have place d Child Rights Impact Assessments (CRIAs) on a statutory footing.

EU consults children from conflict zones on the impact of war on their lives and human rights

In December 2025, the European Union held a first-of-its-kind consultation in Geneva with 23 children aged 12–17 from conflict-affected countries including Ukraine, Sudan, South Sudan, Palestine, Colombia, Mexico, Afghanistan, Myanmar and the Democratic Republic of the Congo , questioning them on how armed conflict has affected their life.
