Drawing on findings from our 2026 State of Children's Rights Report, evidence from our members, and international perspectives, we explore how children's rights can be implemented through the five principles of a Children's Human Rights Approach: embedding, equality and non-discrimination, empowerment, participation, and accountability.

Meet our Speakers

 Jo Chamberlain, Improvement Coordinator (Rights & Participation), Highland Council

Jo Chamberlain is an Improvement Coordinator (Rights & Participation) within the Psychological Service at Highland Council, with over 20 years’ experience in children’s services. She leads the implementation of Highland’s Children and Young People’s Participation Strategy, co-developed with children and young people, working across the Community Planning Partnership to embed children’s rights and meaningful participation in policy, practice and decision-making.

Dr Bernadette Cairns, Educational Psychologist, Highland Council

Having qualified as an Educational Psychologist in 1991 and moving to Highland Council Psychological Service in 1992, Dr Bernadette Cairns has spent her career supporting and advocating for children’s rights and service improvement both within the Psychological Service and for 8 years in the Council’s Senior Management Team as Head of Service for Children with Additional Support Needs.

Bernadette has recently retired from her leadership role as Principal Educational Psychologist having acquired significant knowledge of additional needs as these relate to children from birth to 18 and extensive experience working with families, professionals and organisations.

Eva Bjarnadóttir, Director of Advocacy, UNICEF Iceland

Eva Bjarnadóttir is the Director of Advocacy at UNICEF Iceland. With a background in journalism and national politics, Eva brings a multidisciplinary perspective to her work in children's rights. She holds a master's degree in international political theory and teaches at the University of Iceland’s Political Science Department. She is particularly passionate about the rights of asylum-seeking and refugee children, advocating for their protection and meaningful inclusion in society. At the webinar Eva will share insights on how the implementation of the CRC is going in Iceland and the lessons learned.
