A new report from Family Fund reveals that 93% of families raising disabled or seriously ill children are digitally excluded or at risk of exclusion.
Drawing on responses from 660 families across the UK, the research highlights how the rising cost of living, lack of accessible devices, and limited digital skills are cutting children off from essential online opportunities.
The financial strain is great: 89% of parents and carers say they struggle to afford internet access and the devices, apps, and assistive software their children rely on. The burden is made heavier by the £1,000‑a‑month extra cost associated with disability. Over half of families find their internet service difficult to afford, and 32% are limiting their own internet use or cutting back on food and heating to keep their children connected.
For many, going online isn’t optional. 69% say digital access is essential for their child’s learning, especially when health needs prevent regular school attendance or when assistive technologies are required.
Family Fund is calling for urgent action to close the digital divide and ensure disabled children can learn, communicate, and thrive.
