Twenty years after a landmark United Nations study on violence against children, the UN has called for stronger global action to protect children from abuse and violence, including growing risks linked to digital technology and artificial intelligence.

The UN Special Representative, Dr Najat Maalla M’jid highlighted that while progress has been made, ongoing crises and new online threats continue to put children at risk. She said that violence against children is never acceptable and can always be prevented. The UN has called for countries to share their experiences, strengthen partnerships and invest in child protection and wellbeing. The Pathfinding Global Alliance on Ending Violence against Children, which brings together 55 countries, is working to support these efforts. Dr Maalla M’jid said that although her tenure is ending, the responsibility to protect every child from violence must continue, ensuring no child is left behind.
