xTogether's Blog Series: The #UNCRCScotland in Practice
Date: 26th September 2025
Category:
Children in armed forces families, Care Experienced children, Children affected by substance misuse
Throughout August and September, we’re running a blog series to mark the first anniversary of the #UNCRCScotland Act, which came into effect on 16 July 2024. This is an opportunity to both celebrate and reflect on the contributions of children, young people, members, professionals and adults who are committed to making children’s human rights a reality.
On the 1st of September, we joined up with Circle Scotland and Scottish Families Affected by Drugs and Alcohol to launch their blog highlighting “Empowerment" as a principle of a Children's Human Rights Approach. This blog shows how the UNCRC is being put into practice by supporting children, families and young people facing challenges like drug and alcohol use, poverty, trauma and social inequalities. Circle Scotland and Scottish Families Affected by Drugs and Alcohol focus on empowering children and families, listening to their voices, meeting basic needs and giving them real choices in how support is delivered.
On the 15th of September, we joined up with our member Forces Children Scotland to launch their article highlighting "Children and Young People’s Voices at the Heart of Change" as a principle of a Children's Human Rights Approach.
Forces children highlighted how children from forces families often feel overlooked, moving schools frequently, facing separations due to deployment and having their transition out of service life undervalued. They showed how meaningful participation, through campaigns like Tornado of Change campaign and peer-support services like Ruby Boots, give young people opportunities to make their voices heard and bring about change in services and policy.
On the 22nd of September, we joined up with Harmeny Scotland to launch their blog highlighting “Equality and non-discrimination" as a principle of a Children's Human Rights Approach.
“Equality and non-discrimination" is about ensuring that every child and young person has what they need in order to have equal opportunity to fulfil their potential. Together has been supporting Harmeny Education Trust to address barriers faced by children in their care when trying to open bank accounts, highlighting how this issue conflicts with children’s rights standards.
