Civil society organisations, including Child Rights Connect, has issued a joint statement calling for urgent action to support the United Nations Human Rights Treaty Bodies, which are facing a serious financial crisis.

The statement was released during the 37th meeting of the Chairpersons of the Human Rights Treaty Bodies. CSos warns that the lack of funding is putting the whole system at risk and could prevent it from properly protecting human rights across the world. They are urging countries that have signed international human rights treaties to match their promises with action by providing the money and support needed to keep the system running.

Since January 2024, civil society organisations have also faced new barriers, such as being unable to join treaty body meetings online. This has made it harder for a wide range of voices to be heard in human rights discussions.

The CSos are calling on UN Member States to:

  • Pay their assessed contributions to the UN in full and on time;
  • Reaffirm their commitment to the human rights system through political and financial support;
  • Ensure the accessibility of treaty body processes, as well as other human rights mechanisms.
