Children in Scotland’s advisory group of young people Changing our World (CoW) has welcomed the ban on disposable vapes and support the move for its environmental and health benefits. However, they continue to urge the Scottish Government to take further action on refillable and rechargeable vapes.

Since 2022, CoW has long raised concerns about youth vaping, speaking directly with ministers and publishing recommendations to improve regulations, packaging, and education. At Children in Scotland’s recent Annual Conference, members highlighted doubts about how effective the ban will be if young people can still access reusable vapes. At the recently held Children in Scotland’s Annual Conference, CoW members talked about the new ban with professionals who work with children and young people. While many agreed that the ban is good for the environment, some worried it might not stop young people from vaping. One member said:

“I know young people who can still buy vapes in small shops. If they just switch to reusable vapes, it won’t solve the problem of addiction.”

Children in Scotland would like to see children and young people invited to be more fully involved in developing future solutions, using recommendations from groups like CoW to put practical, impactful legislation in place.
