The Scottish Government has published new statistics on children and young people in care, showing a small drop in the number of children being looked after.

As of 31st July 2024, 11,844 children were classed as ‘Looked After’ in Scotland – a 2% decrease from the previous year. Most of these children were being cared for in their communities, with 35% living with relatives (kinship carers), 22% with foster carers, and 20% at home with their parents. The report also shows that 54% of looked after children lived in one of Scotland’s most deprived areas, while only 3% were from the least deprived areas.

Just over 1,100 young people were in continuing care – extended support for those leaving care – making up 22% of those eligible. Meanwhile, 4,454 young people received aftercare support, up 7% from last year. Over half of those receiving aftercare were in education, training, or work.

The data was gathered from all 32 of Scotland’s local authorities and covers the period from 1 August 2023 to 31 July 2024.
