The Scottish Government introduced a new Bill to parliament on 30th April 2025. The Bill proposes certain changes around the process for withdrawing pupils from religious observance.

Our member, Humanist Society Scotland, writes:

“No child mature enough to decide they don't believe in a god should be forced to pray at school. Despite clear recommendations from the UN Committee, the Scottish Government's current plans for religious observance won’t give school pupils the right to opt themselves out. The status-quo fails to respect children’s freedom of religion or belief and their right to be heard. Ministers also risk failing to comply with their own UNCRC legislation if they go ahead as planned. Help us fund an independent legal opinion on the government's proposals from a senior KC to strengthen our argument with the government. Find out more and please consider making a donation today.”
