On 24th March, Scottish Government launched its Play Vision Statement and Action Plan 2025-30, alongside an announcement of £25 million for play park renewals over the coming year.

The vision statement says:

“Our vision for Scotland is that play is welcomed, celebrated and nurtured. That every child is able to play across all stages and aspects of their life to support their social development, resilience, language and communication development, health, physical and mental wellbeing “

The move comes after the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child called on the UK and devolved governments to do more to promote children’s right to play, rest, leisure, cultural and artistic life. In its 2023 Concluding Observations, the UN Committee said that governments should develop a strategy on upholding children’s rights under Article 31 UNCRC and that this must be backed up by resources. It also called for play to be integrated into the curriculum, for equal access to play space, and for action to ensure children are involved in decisions about urban planning, including the development of play spaces.
