Children in armed forces families

In celebration of Month of the Military Child, Together has published a blog celebrating the strengths and contributions of forces children in their communities.
Children in military families often face frequent moves, parental separation and disrupted education. Although many have shown resilience, this should not be an excuse for adults and systems to not provide proper support. Forces children contributed to Together’s State of Children’s Rights Report 2024, courageously sharing their lived experiences of their rights in relation to family life, education and wellbeing during parental deployments.
The blog emphasises that the challenges forces children face, such as lack of information, inadequate housing and feelings of invisibility within their schools are real and must be addressed. Furthermore, it calls for practical, age-appropriate support as well as praising children for their strength.
Finally, it celebrates the Rights Charter co-produced by armed forces children through Forces Children Scotland, aimed at keeping their rights in focus and driving systemic change. Adults and institutions are urged to listen, care and act to make forces children’s rights a reality.
