EU children at risk of becoming ‘undocumented’

The Children’s Society has expressed concerns at the low number of care-experienced children registering under the EU Settlement Scheme.

Only 39% of EU national children living in care in the UK, or recent care leavers, have had applications made on their behalf to remain in the UK following Brexit. With the deadline applications for settled status fast approaching, this could leave many young people unknowingly living in the UK unlawfully.

This could mean they lose the right to work, claim financial support, rent a home, hold a bank account, access further education and could even face deportation.

The deadline to apply for settled status is the 30th June 2021.
