Together responds to Scottish Parliament Human Rights Inquiry

Together's submission to the Scottish Parliament European and External Relations Committee outlines how the Human Rights Act (1998) (HRA) succeeds in respecting, protecting and fulfilling children's rights in Scotland and is clear that the HRA must not be repealed.

The Human Rights Inquiry was focused on the UK Government's proposed repeal of the HRA and its replacement with a British Bill of Rights.

In the absence of detailed proposals from the UK Government, Together's response gives an overarching picture of the extent to which the existing HRA succeeds in protecting, respecting and fulfilling children's human rights in Scotland. The response is clear that the HRA must not be repealed; that there must be no regression in the protection of children's human rights and that there is a need to build and expand upon the protections of the HRA, including the incorporation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into UK and Scots law.
