"Who's Afraid of Children's Rights?"

Date: 3rd June 2013
Category: UK 1st periodic review

On 14th June 2013 Baroness Hale of Richmond, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom and the most senior female judge in the history of the country, will deliver the inaugural lecture of the Wales Observatory on Human Rights of Children and Young People.

UNICEF UK is co-hosting the event together with the observatory to mark the first anniversary of the coming into effect of the Rights of Children and Young Persons (Wales) Measure 2011, which is the first General Measure of Incorporation of the UNCRC in the United Kingdom.

With a closing date of the 26th July 2013, a call for evidence has been issued for the Children and Young People (Scotland) Bill. The Welsh Measure provides a useful model to consider the potential for similar legislation to be included in the Children and Young People (Scotland) Bill, to help strengthen the Bill as it currently stands.

The lecture - "Who's Afraid of Children's Rights?" - will be the first of an annual series of lectures focusing on child rights.

The intended audience is academics and students, practitioners, legal professionals, politicians and decision-makers, and children and young people.

This will be a free public event and everyone is welcome.

  • The lecture is taking place at the Grove Lecture Theatre, Grove Building, Swansea University at 6pm.
