Every year, the Children and Young People’s Commissioner Scotland (CYPCS) presents a report to Scottish Parliament to share what work has been done. This year’s report covers April 2019 to March 2020.

The report highlights that the Commissioner’s group of Young Advisers and the annual Human Rights Gathering have helped CYPCS better engage with children and young people and understand what matters most to them. Building upon their voices, CYPCS has created a strategic plan for the next four years. Children and young people have also aided the redevelopment of the CYPCS website to become more accessible and informative.

The report explores various ways in which CYPCS has helped ensure children and young people’s rights were protected, promoted, and respected during 2019-20. Examples include:

  • Supporting the full and direct incorporation of the UNCRC into Scots law.
  • Supporting the passage of the Children (Equal Protection from Assault) (Scotland) Act 2019.
  • Investigating the issue of children in secure accommodation being unlawfully deprived of their liberty.
  • Examining the use of restraint and seclusion in schools.
