This media guide provides information on the newly appointed Special Rapporteurs and Independent Experts, outlining their profile, role and how you can contact them.

Independent Experts are appointed to examine, monitor, advice and publicly report on human rights situations either in specific countries or on thematic issues related to human rights violations worldwide. Special Rapporteurs usually submit thematic to the Commission on Human Rights and for some also to the General Assembly, undertake country visits and send communications on alleged violations of human rights to the Governments concerns, and issuing press releases on specific matters of concern. Ms. Mary Lawlor is the new Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders.

Independent Experts possess particular expertise in human rights, examine, monitor, advise and publicly report on the status of human rights in specific countries or on thematic issues related to human rights violations globally. Special Rapporteurs conduct a similar role, however their role usually involves submitting thematic reports to the Commission on Human rights, and for some Special Rapporteurs they also submit reports to the General Assembly. They take on country visits and document alleged violations of human rights to the Government concerned and they issue press releases on specific matters of grave concern.
