This database is a powerful tool to respect, protect and fulfil human rights and fundamental freedoms, as it includes more than 79,000 Universal Periodic Review recommendations and 1,500 voluntary pledges that States have made.

Universal Periodic Review provides an opportunity to review the human rights progress of UN member states, as countries can declare what actions they have taken to improve human rights in their own countries and what they have done to overcome any challenges to the fulfilment of rights. Other countries can make recommendations on where further improvements could be made and this database offers the benefits of more timely updates of the recommendations and voluntary pledges. The database also can be used to facilitate research on thematic issues across different countries, on topics such as youth rights, gender-based violence, rights for older people, access to justice etc.
