Together’s Director hosts webinar on UNCRC incorporation

The webinar focused on Scottish Government’s commitment to incorporate the UNCRC into Scots law, and what is needed to ensure this commitment is fully realised in practice.

The webinar consisted of a 20 minute presentation, followed by a Q&A session.

Juliet’s presentation looked at the different ways Scottish Government has proposed it could bring the UNCRC into Scots law:

  1. Copying and pasting it directly into Scots law; or
  2. Picking certain rights to create a ‘Scottish suite of rights’.

Juliet drew on international experience and the work of the Independent Advisory Group on incorporation to highlight the advantages of the first option. The Advisory Group, convened by Together and the Children and Young People’s Commissioner Scotland, brought together a range of experts on children’s human rights and incorporation, producing a draft Bill for incorporation. This Bill sets out the “gold standard” model for incorporation.
