The UN General Assembly has announced it has selected ‘children without parental care’ as the theme for the 2019 ‘Rights of the Child’ resolution. Together welcomes this announcement, having been part of the global coalition of NGOs who called for UN Member States to adopt this resolution.
Once adopted, the non-binding resolution has the potential to become international guidance for states and relevant stakeholders on protecting the rights of children without parental care.
2019 marks the 10th anniversary of the UN Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children and therefore, this resolution offers member states the opportunity to initiate, further regulate and improve childcare legislation and policies being developed and implemented worldwide.
