Human Rights Council hold Annual Day on the Rights of Child

Date: 29th March 2018
Category: Other human rights treaties and mechanisms

The Annual Day on the Rights of the Child was held during the 37th session of the Human Rights Council where topics for the panel discussions included children's rights in humanitarian situations and how to increase accountability within the international community.

During the discussions, panellists argued that although the framework of protection of children's rights existed, it was the implementation of this that caused barriers to children accessing their rights. Other issues discussed included the lack of access to sexual and reproductive health and rights in humanitarian situations, the impact on access to education and protecting children from recruitment as child soldiers.

Several NGOs joined to release a statement calling on Member States, the UN and all humanitarian actors to prioritise the UNCRC and children's rights in humanitarian situations.
