Review of the Gender Recognition Act 2004

Scottish Government are seeking views on proposed reforms to the Gender Recognition Act 2004 with regards to transgender people applying for legal recognition of their acquired gender.

Deadline: March 1st 2018

Proposed reforms of the Act include streamlining the process for obtaining legal recognition and allowing people aged 16 and over to apply. Views are also being sought about the options for people under 16 and for recognition of non-binary people.

The consultation is about the legal process of obtaining legal gender recognition and it does not cover the services provided by NHS Scotland to transgender people. The Scottish Government have committed to seeking views about addressing the issues experienced by intersex people and there will be a separate consultation held on this in the coming months.
