The Scottish Government has published updated guidance on managing school exclusions.
This includes a new section on de-escalation and physical intervention, and managing incidents involving weapons.
The refreshed guidance aims to give a stronger focus on approaches that can be used to prevent the need for exclusion and focuses on prevention and early intervention as well as response to individual needs in line with GIRFEC. The guidance emphasises that exclusion should only be used as a last resort.
The guidance, entitled 'Included, Engaged and Involved Part 2: A Positive Approach to Preventing and Managing School Exclusions' will replace the previous guidance which was published in 2011.
The Pupil Inclusion Network Scotland (PINS) plans to develop information for parents on the guidance.
