New Commissioner for Children and Young People in Scotland being recruited

Date: 29th November 2016
Category: Best interests of the child

The search for a new Children and Young People's Commissioner has begun. Tam Baillie, Commissioner since 2009, steps down in May 2017.

The new Commissioner's main duty will be to safeguard the rights of all those under 18, and all those under 21 who have been looked after or are in care.

Former Barnado's policy director Tam Baillie, Commissioner since 2009, steps down in May. He played a prominent role in a number of political controversies, criticising police stop and search for breaching children's rights, warning Scotland's football clubs against exploiting young talent, and attacking the armed forces for targeting recruitment in deprived areas.
