Commissioner’s office launches annual report

The Commissioner's office have recently launched their annual report for the 2014-2015 financial year. The office, formally known as SCCYP have changed their name to reflect how children and young people come first.

What's in the report?

The Golden Rules

The report contains a discussion of the Golden Rules symbols resource. These are a set of principles that can:

- remind adults what children and young people want from participation
- help children and young people think about how adults can support them to participate.

The Golden Rules were developed through consultation with adult practitioners, and children and young people.

'Austerity bites'

Austerity Bites is a participative project created on behalf of the European Network of Ombudspersons for Children (ENOC) for its 18th Annual Conference and General Assembly.

The project is made up of 32 short films created by young people from 8 different countries across Europe.

Through a mixture of live film, animation and other techniques, the shorts give an insight into what austerity policies mean for the young people involved. They can be used individually or in small groups as an education and advocacy resource, and will be available shortly in a range of formats.

Youth Sports Strategy

In December 2013 the Scottish Government published its draft Youth Sport Strategy and, through consultation questions, invited adults to let them know what they thought of its content and aims.

Following this, the Commissioner worked with the Scottish Government to make sure the views of children were represented in the consultation. Activity packs designed by the Participation and Education team asking for 3 to 11-year olds' views on sport were sent to a number of nurseries, schools and youth groups.

The consultation's four key themes were:
- Great opportunities;
- Great people;
- Great places;
- Higher profile-hearing more about children and sports.
