Together responds to draft sport Strategy consultation

Date: 2nd March 2014
Category: Education, Leisure and Cultural Activities

Together has responded to the Scottish Government's consultation on 'Giving children and young people a sporting chance: A draft Strategy for Scotland' for which the deadline was 2nd March 2014.

Together's consultation response specifically focused on children's rights and sport activities. It reflected on how the vision of the Strategy to make Scotland the best place in the world to grow up actively can be best achieved, fully taking into account children's rights as enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

The response encouraged the Scottish Government to undertake a Child Rights Impact Assessment on the draft Strategy, to fully consider the impact of the Strategy on children and young people.

It then covered the importance of participation (Article 12 of the UNCRC), non-discrimination (Article 2 of the UNCRC), education of the benefits of being physically active (Article 24 of the UNCRC), the recognition of the numerous types of physical activity which sit alongside sport and the need for a joined-up approach (Article 31) and the types of environment that need to be secured.

The final Strategy and Action Plan are set to be published in spring 2014.
