South Sudan is on the way to becoming the next State to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), with the country's Parliament passing a bill to that effect in November 2013.

Once the bill is signed by President Salva Kiir, the State will become the 194th to ratify the Convention. By agreeing to comply with by this legally-binding instrument, national governments commit to incorporating the full range of children's rights into national legislation - including their civil, political, social, cultural and economic rights - and to be held accountable for this commitment.

With the upcoming ratification, it will leave Somalia and the United States as the only two countries to not have ratified the Convention.
