Scottish Government publishes first National Play Strategy

The Scottish Government published its first National Play Strategy on 21st June 2013, setting out a vision for the implementation of Article 31 of the UNCRC in Scotland.

The right to play, leisure and cultural activities was highlighted on the international child rights agenda earlier this year, when the UN General Comment on Article 31 of the UNCRC was adopted by the Committee on the Rights of the Child on 1st February 2013.

The Scottish Government have welcomed the General Comment on Article 31 in their new National Play Strategy, which sets out the Government's vision for play in Scotland. The strategy states that 'we want Scotland to be the best place to grow up. A nation which values play as a life-enhancing daily experience for all our children and young people; in their homes, nurseries, schools and communities.'

The Strategy includes sections on play in the home; at nursery and school and in the community. It also refers to an Action Plan, which the Government says will build on the National Play Strategy and is set to be published in autumn 2013.
