    UK Government has introduced a new Migration Bill or, more fittingly known as, the “Refugee Ban Bill. If passed, it will have a deeply negative impact on the human rights of migrants, women, children and young people. Together has joined JustRight Scotland, Scottish Refugee Council and other civil society organisations to oppose the Bill.

  • UK Government responds to critical report on the 'Rights Removal Bill'

    The UK Government wants to ‘overhaul’ the Human Rights Act 1998 by repealing and replacing it with a Bill of Rights. This will remove many of the protections set out in the Human Rights Act. The UK Government has now replied to a report by the Joint Committee on Human Rights which raised concerns. The UK Government has overwhelmingly disagreed with the recommendations made by the Committee.

  • Calling the UK Government to ratify without exceptions to protect all women against violence

    Ten years ago, the UK Government committed to tackling violence against women by signing the ‘Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence’, better known as the ‘Istanbul Convention’. UK Government has said it will put this Convention into law. However, certain protections will not apply to migrant women. This is because the UK Government has chosen to opt-out of ratifying certain parts of the Convention meaning migrant women will be denied life-saving support and protection.

  • Steps to mitigate UK ‘No Recourse to Public Funds’ policy

    Under UK Government policy, many migrants have ‘No Recourse to Public Funds’ (NRPF). This restricts their access to welfare, housing, and financial support. To mitigate its effects, Scottish Government has announced a further £278,784 is being made available to six organisations supporting people subject to NRPF in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
