    The EU Withdrawal Bill has now completed its bumpy 11-month ride through the Houses of Parliament with Royal Assent the final stage needed before the Bill becomes law. Some improvements have been made, such as reducing the scope for Henry VIII powers. However, despite our efforts, the fight to protect the Charter of Fundamental Rights was lost in the final days of the debates.

  • UK ratifies Lanzarote Convention to tackle child sexual exploitation

  • New Council of Europe Handbook for Local Authorities on Human Rights

    A new human rights handbook has been launched by the Council of Europe's Congress of Local and Regional Authorities. The handbook encourages local authorities to promote human rights in their policies and sets out many examples of good practice. Notably, it discusses the role local authorities must play in protecting the rights of asylum-seeking children, children from Gypsy/Traveller backgrounds and LGBTI children.

  • EU (Withdrawal) Bill Update: Equality and Human Rights Commission criticises UK Government's right-by-right analysis of the EU Charter

    On 16th January 2018, Together highlighted criticisms which had been made about the UK Government's "right-by-right" analysis of the EU Charter (read the article here). This criticism has continued and on 18th January 2018 the Equality and Human Rights Commission published a Legal Opinion on the matter. In this Opinion, Jason Coppel QC concludes that removing the Charter will result in a reduction in rights, contrary to what the UK Government claims.
