  • Launch of Youth Justice Voices Newsletter and opportunities to get involved

    ‘Youth Just Us’ is Staf’s steering group for its Youth Justice Project. The group has launched its monthly newsletter and the July edition includes the group’s art, information about how young people are coping during COVID-19 and what young people are doing to keep busy. The group is also looking for new members to join, to take part in a range of activities whilst creatively influencing change in the care and justice systems.

  • Child Rights and Inclusion Strategy consultation

    Children’s Hearings Scotland wants to hear from organisations associated with the care sector or those who work directly with children with experience of care in a series of feedback sessions about its Child Rights and Inclusion Strategy. The Strategy aims to ensure children feel able to speak openly and honestly in hearings, that their views are given real weight in the decision-making process and children feel empowered and have ownership of their rights.

  • Being heard - one year on

    ‘Being Heard’ was one of the largest studies undertaken in 2018 into young people’s engagement within Scottish local authorities. This new report, tracking developments one year on, finds local authorities have made progress towards improving the role of young people in decision-making, despite cuts to councils’ youth service budgets. However, in many cases youth-engagement is still not enough and therefore, the report makes 10 recommendations.

  • Children (Scotland) Bill update

    The Children (Scotland) Bill aims to make changes to how disputes involving children are resolved when families break down. It aims to ensure the voice of the child is heard in court proceedings, measures are aimed at protecting the best interests of children and regulate child contact centres and child welfare reporters. This Bill has now passed stage two, during which proposed amendments were voted on.

  • COVID-19: Results from survey offer insight into how parents and carers are coping during lockdown

    Connect’s survey ran for the first four weeks of school closures and received 1578 responses from parents and carers across 29 local authorities in Scotland. Concerns of parents and carers include: their ability to support their child’s learning, children’s health and wellbeing, lack of social interaction and absence of communication from school or nursery.

  • COVID-19: Survey results reveal further support should made available to care-experienced children

    Adoption UK ran a week-long survey in April for parents and carers of care-experienced children who would normally be in school. The UK-wide survey received 660 valid responses and found 85% of care-experienced children are not receiving additional support for their home-based learning. Following this finding, the organisation is calling on the governments in all four nations to provide additional funding and resources to help schools support these children.

    Scottish Government has published two documents on the steps it is taking to promote, protect and respect children’s human rights during the current pandemic. The reports were prepared in response to the statement by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in April which set out 11 recommendations on what governments should do to take a children’s rights-based approach to the crisis.
