Together responds to Carers Legislation consultation

Category: Family Environment and Alternative Care

23rd April 2014

Together submitted a child rights focused submission to the Scottish Government's consultation on proposals for Carers Legislation.

To ensure that the Scottish Government's proposals for Carers Legislation are fully assessed in terms of their impact on the rights of children, we strongly recommended that a child rights impact assessment (CRIA) must be undertaken on the proposals. This would ensure that the impact of the proposals are predicted, monitored, and if necessary, avoided or mitigated.

The response reflects on the general principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) on a number of occasions, whilst highlighting the specific circumstances and needs of young carers in Scotland. Due to the specific circumstances and caring responsibilities of young carers, their rights as enshrined in the UNCRC are challenged and often denied.
